Our second seminar was with John Beavis who is a former Commando Forces surgeon, now an Orthopedic and Trauma Surgeon with extensive experience in war surgery and the problems of disasters. His charity IDEALS runs substantial programmes for brain injury and cerebral palsy on the West Bank and Gaza.
In 1993 John began regular visits to Bosnia performing war surgery in the State Hospital in Sarajevo . He was awarded the Bosnian Medal of Honour for this work. John continued Bosnian activities as visiting Consultant to the State Hospital, where he was involved in reconstruction of services in a variety of orthopaedic and trauma sub specialties.
This experience evolved into John carrying out Primary Trauma Care training in the North West frontier of Pakistan (NWFP) in 2003, and subsequently to the Sindh area and Pakistan.
With the international disaster aid charity IDEALS John became involved in reconstructive work in Sri Lanka after the 2004 tsunami. He worked extensively both clinically and assisting in reconstructive work in NWFP following October 1995 earthquake.
John became Chairman of IDEALS, and in 2003 was appointed Hunterian Professor, Royal College of Surgeons of England.
