National War Veteran Numbers (from a briefing paper by Dr Martina Mueller, Consultant Clinical Psychologist and head of the Oxford Cognitive Therapy Trauma Service.)
The available data are not robust, but it is estimated that nationally there are about 4 million veterans (defined as someone who served in the military for at least one day).
Around half of these left the military before 1960 and are now over 70 years of age. They thus represent a significant proportion of the older age community.
About 18,000 servicemen and women leave the military every year, of whom around 2,000 leave on medical grounds.
Additionally, the families of veterans amount to around 5 million people.
