The Foundation’s neurosurgical team, Prof Tipu Aziz and Mr Alex Green, are carrying out radical pain relief procedures on war veterans referred to us by DMRC Headley Court.

We already have the world’s largest caseload of deep brain stimulation operations – implanting electrodes into precise points deep inside the brain, then using electrical impulses to modify the brain signals to relieve unbearable pain from amputations and other very serious injuries.  Patients would otherwise require quality of life-destroying quantities of opiates, which in many of these cases are ineffective.

We will carry out research trials to make these treatments more efficient and effective.

In the next stage of our research, we aim to make the procedures suitable for use at military field hospital level and possibly further down the treatment chain; and also very much less invasive, so military patients may return to their military jobs.
